Adventure Sailing - Fall 2024

Looking for a unique activity this fall? Get out of the house, off of the computer, and onto the river! Enjoy recreation and instruction aboard a variety of boats - dinghies, catamarans, and keelboats.
No experience required! Recommended for 6th to 8th grade beginner, intermediate, and advanced sailors. Recommended for 9th to 12th grade sailors of all abilities not interested in racing (refer to High School Sailing Team sessions if interested in a more racing-focused program). Sailors will be grouped by age whenever possible.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Participants will learn seamanship and sailing skills, learn to work in teams, meet new friends, and explore the East River.
LOCATION: Waterfront Programs take place at McMurray Hall on SUNY Maritime College's campus at 6 Pennyfield Avenue, Bronx, NY 10465. Mass transit and parking are available.

High School Sailing Team-Fall 2024

FALL SESSION:
Sept. 9 - Nov. 1, 2024Sessions run Mondays & Fridays, 4:00 - 6:30 PMLearn to race and gain the skills to compete at local, regional, or even national level regattas.
SKILL LEVEL:
Recommended for novice to advanced sailors with an interest in racing.WHAT TO EXPECT: High School Sailing is run like an after-school sport. Monday and Friday practices are led by coaches and waterfront staff and consist of briefings, drills, games and racing on the water. Practice is primarily sailed in dinghies (420s and FJs).Sailors from multiple schools will be combined based on skill level, have an opportunity to sail with different partners, and may attend regattas as part of a composite team. SUNY Maritime College provides everything needed to participate including sailboats (420s and FJs), coaches, safety boats, and life jackets at one of the best waterfront facilities in the country. High School Sailing is co-ed and open to both individuals and teams.

Safe Powerboat Handling

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Are you serious about learning how to operate a boat safely and building your on-the-water boat handling skills? Get out of the classroom and behind the wheel! Taught by experienced and certified instructors, this 2-day course is the most comprehensive safe boating course available, combining theoretical classroom knowledge with hands-on demonstrations, lessons and on-the-water drills. Whether you are a beginner or experienced powerboat driver, this course is guaranteed to make you a better boater!
TOPICS COVERED: Classroom topics: Boats, motors & terminology; registration & legal requirements; safety equipment & procedures; rules of the road; basic navigation; emergency procedures & rendering assistance; fueling, launching & trailering; weather, and more! Dockside & on-the-water skills: Operations checklists; engine troubleshooting; leaving & returning to a dock or slip; slow and high speed boat handling and close-quarters maneuvering; towing; person in the water recovery; anchoring; and more!
CERTIFICATIONS GRANTED: US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Certification. This is a NY State and NASBLA approved course. This course is approved by NY State to meet the NY State Safe Boating Certificate requirements.
PREREQUISITE: None
SKILL LEVELS: All levels
AGES: 10 years old and up. Children under 12 shall be accompanied by a parent.
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE: Anyone looking to learn to operate a powerboat safely and/or practice and improve on-the-water boat handling skills. This is a hands-on driving course, plus classroom theory.
SCHEDULE: 2-day, 16-hr course

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Do you already have a State Boating Certificate and want hands-on instruction, and lots of on-the-water time? Taught by experienced and certified instructors, this 1-day course emphasizes hands-on demonstrations, lessons and on-the-water drills. Suitable for all skill levels, this is a hands-on driving course with minimal classroom time for those with prior theoretical and classroom knowledge.
TOPICS COVERED: Dockside & on-the-water skills: Operations checklists; engine troubleshooting; leaving & returning to a dock or slip; slow and high speed boat handling and close-quarters maneuvering; navigation; towing; person in the water recovery; anchoring; and more!
CERTIFICATIONS GRANTED: US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Certification
PREREQUISITE: None
SKILL LEVEL: All levels
AGES: 12 years old and older
